TEXT AND PHOTOS BY TOM EHRLICH @
This report includes Saturday and Sunday performances by Miguel Zenon and Luis Perdomo Duo's project "El Atrte de Bolero." Miguel and Luis are two of best and most successful musicians on the current music scene. Miguel, originaly from Puerto Rico and currently residing in New York City, is a master saxophonist, composer and arranger who leads numerous groups and projects. Luis, originally from Venezuela and currently residing also in New York City, is a master pianist, composer and arranger who leads his own groups as well as being a first call pianist who is constantly busy. Miguel and Luis have been touring the world with their "El Arte de Bolero" project for a number of years and have released Volume I and Volume 2 of thiis project with Volume 2 winning a 2024 Grammy.as the Best Latin Jazz recording.
Miguel describes this project: "These are songs they (Miguel and Luis) have heard hundreds of times, familiar pieces of music they know very well, and that is sort of the way I feel about the repertoire on this album. We chose compositions from the Bolero Era that we could just play right away, without giving it a second thought: songs from the times of our parents and grandparents that somehow stuck around long enough for us to get to know them and truly love them." They take these famiar songs from their childhood and turn them into beautiful, improvised jazz compositions.
