The final music event of my last trip to NYC was at the Jazz Gallery to see Yosvany Terry and one of his groups. The Jazz Gallery, my favorite jazz club in New York City, features established veterans of the jazz world as well as "emerging greats" at a reasonable price. Yosvany is originally from Camagüey, Cuba, went to some of the best music schools in Cuba, was in the forefront of taking Cuban jazz in a new direction in the 1990's and has lived in NYC since 1999. He is an outstanding sax player, composer and one of the best chékere players in the world. Yosvany's father, Don Poncho Terry, considered the premier chékere player in the world, is also a violinist and was one of the leaders of the famous Maravilla de Florida. Yosvany has two fantastic CDs, Twisted Noon (2001) and Metamorphosis (2006). Yosvany has recorded and performed with many great salsa and jazz groups. His brother, Yunior Terry, one of the most in demand bass players in New York City, was with Yosvany at the Jazz Gallery as well as great Cuban piano player Osmany Paredes, up and coming trumpet player Michael Rodríguez and Justin Brown on drums.
Yosvany's performance was part of the Jazz Gallery's Composers Series II, where he debuted his new compositions entitled "Trio + Keys". The music was simply incredible.
