IBEYI
THE INDEPENDENT, SAN FRANCISCO, CA
APRIL 2, 2015
Ibeyi means twins in Yoruba. Ibeyi is Lisa Kaine Díaz and Naomi Díaz, Cuban/French twins, daughters of the late great Cuban percussionist Angá Díaz and are international sensations. Within hours of tickets going on sale for their show in San Francisco, it was sold out.
Ibeyi performs as a duo with Lisa on keyboards and vocals and Naomi on percussion (mostly cajón and batás), beats and vocals, fusing Yoruban chants with soulful melodies, beautifully sung vocals over electronic looping of their music, hip hop elements and electronica. These talented young ladies sing orisha chants in Yoruba and English vocals in their mostly original compositions. Ibeyi have a warm, friendly and charimatic stage pressence and their first self-titled recording is an outstanidng project musically and the packaging is unique and appealing. They had CD and vinyl versions of their recording for sale and the vinyl version sold out.
