MAKING OF VANVANEO

ENGLISH: The next official video from the "Legado" album is "Vanvaneo" and will be released soon at Los Van Van's official YouTube channel. The "Making of" video was uploaded yesterday and gives us all a glimpse behind the curtain. In addition to video of the band, the clip makes clever use of caricatures by Esteban Isnardi, who is also known in the world of timba as a dance instructor and composer. Esteban took a moment to explain how this collaboration came about.

Esteban: The director and filmmaker Alejandro Valera Losa, who is the one who usually makes the clips for Los Van Van, wrote to me one day asking me if he could use my caricatures of the band members for the VanVaneo video clip. As you can imagine, with the greatest of pride and the greatest of happiness, I said yes. As he later told me, he had come up with the idea after he saw me interrupt the Los Van Van concert in Hamburg in 2016 to give each musician his cartoon in front of the screaming audience.

I sent him the production that he requested, some ready-made cartoons and others that I was working on or transforming, according to his needs. My interaction with the musicians of Los Van Van began before this, and it increased with many comments or messages about this work.

I think I can say that as a cartoonist linked to Cuban music, this is my greatest achievement, something like my crown, because I cannot aspire to anything higher than having my cartoons as protagonists in a clip from Los Van Van. I discovered in the production process that they were cheering them in Cuba, and they have truly done an incredible job, because my drawings come to life without losing for a moment the initial similarity that I tried to capture. Alejandro Valera's sensitivity is amazing, his talent is evident not only in the clips he makes but also in the last movie "De Vuelta al Barrio" that he did with the "El Niño" Emilio Frías.

An anecdote: his wife Farah Portela, a Cuban dance teacher in Glasgow, invited me a few years ago to teach Scotland and at that time I didn't know that she was married to Alejandro, and I couldn't even meet him there.

Another anecdote worth telling: a few days ago Robertón called me, along with his wife, to show me that she had tattooed my cartoon on her shoulder!

This all started with that famous concert in Hamburg, but I didn't do it with the aim of promoting my work or selling myself to them...it was a totally disinterested gesture on my part, but it ended in this video clip. Unfortunately I couldn't travel to Cuba, so my presence is only visible in the Making Of, since Alejandro asked me to film myself to include myself in it.

ESPAÑOL: El próximo video oficial del álbum "Legado" es "Vanvaneo" y se lanzará pronto en el canal oficial de YouTube de Los Van Van. El video "Making of" se subió ayer y nos da un vistazo detrás de la cortina. Además del video de la banda, el clip hace un uso ingenioso de caricaturas de Esteban Isnardi, quien también es conocido en el mundo de la timba como instructor de danza y compositor. Esteban se tomó un momento para explicar cómo surgió esta colaboración.

A continuación hay algunos caricaturas de los Van Van que Esteban ha compartido con nosotros.

Esteban: El realizador y cineasta Alejandro Valera Losa, que es el que habitualmente hace los clips de Los Van Van, me escribió un día preguntándome si era posible que él utilizara mis caricaturas de la orquesta para el videoclip VanVaneo. Te imaginas que yo, con el mayor orgullo y la felicidad más grande, le dije que sí. Según me contó después, él ya venía con esa idea desde que me vio interrumpir el concierto de Los Van Van en Hamburgo en el 2016 para obsequiarle a cada músico su caricatura delante del público que gritaba.

Le mandé la producción que él me pedía, algunas caricaturas ya hechas y otras que fui trabajando o transformando, según las necesidades suyas. La interacción mía con los músicos de Los Van Van venía de antes y ahí se incrementó con muchos comentarios o mensajes en torno a esa obra.

Pienso poder decir que como caricaturista vinculado con la música cubana este es mi mayor logro, algo así como mi corona, pues no puedo aspirar a algo más alto que tener a mis caricaturas como protagonistas en un clip de Los Van Van. Descubrí en el proceso de realización que en Cuba las estaban animando, y han hecho verdaderamente un trabajo increíble pues mis dibujos cobran vida sin perder ni un momento el parecido inicial que yo intenté plasmar. La sensibilidad de Alejandro Valera es asombrosa, su talento queda patente no solamente en los clips que realiza sino en la última película “De Vuelta al Barrio“ que hizo con el “Niño” Emilio Frías.

Una anécdota: su esposa Farah Portela, maestra de bailes cubanos en Glasgow, me invitó hace unos años a enseñar a Escocia y en ese momento yo no sabía que estaba casada con Alejandro, y ni siquiera lo pude conocer a él allá.

Otra anécdota digna de contar: hace unos días me llamó Robertón, junto con su mujer, para mostrarme que ella se había tatuado mi caricatura suya en el hombro! [la foto de arriba]

Todo esto empezó en ese famoso concierto en Hamburgo, pero yo no lo hice con el objetivo de promover mi trabajo o de venderme a ellos...fue un gesto totalmente desinteresado de mi parte, pero que desembocó en este videoclip. Desgraciadamente no pude viajar a Cuba, con lo cual mi presencia es visible solamente en el Making Of, pues Alejandro me pidió que me filmara yo mismo para incluirme en él.
