Second Helping: Los Hermanos Arango Live at Berklee
In February 2012, Los Hermanos Arango appeared live at the Berklee Performance Center in a killer concert that was streamed globally on Berklee's website. Tom Ehrlich's Tiempo Libre Photos
Wil Campa this Weekend
Tiempo LIbre played with the San Francisco Symphony Sunday in historic and picturesque Dolores Park. Surprisingly, their kilted killer bassist Tony "Tebelio" Fonte was replaced by Wilbur "Wilvi" Rodríguez (ex-Carlos Manuel, Ntaya). We're trying to find out if the change is permanent or temporary. Click here for the rest of Tom's photos.
Wil Campa y su Gran Unión at Yoshi's SF Friday and Saturday. This is as tight a timba band as you'll ever hear, with almost no personnel changes for over 5 years, all members living and rehearsing in Havana and the mind-bogglingly great conguero Andrés "Negrón" Miranda, of Issac and Irakere fame. More on these shows soon.
Coming very soon: Peter Maiden's gallery/concert report on the recent Escovedo family reunion concert.
Book News: I'm getting close to finished Beyond Salsa Percussion, Volume 1: Latin Rhythms for Listeners, Dancers and Beginning Drummers. It's already over 200 pages with a long historical listening tour, so this should be a good one for people who don't play an instrument but want to get deeper into scene. [Kevin Moore]
PREMIOS LUCAS OPENS WEB SITE
Cuban Video Awards
Good news for Cuban music fans: Los Premios Lucas or Lucas Awards in inglés, has just launched a homepage! If you are not familiar with the Lucas Awards, they are Cuba's annual award show for music video. Founded in 1995 and held under various names during the early years before finally being named Lucas, the program presents the best in Cuban music video ranked on a weekly basis. Each year around November there is an award ceremony for the best videos of the year. Over time Lucas has grown from an awards show to a festival of Cuban music video. It is a true gala event including live concerts. The Lucasnómetro allows fans to comment on their favorite videos, making the awards a genuine reflection of the preferences of the Cuban people.
For those of us outside of Cuba, the only way to follow Cuban music video has been via Cubavision and YouTube, but with the launch of the new Lucas website, we can all easily keep up-to-date with the latest videos. Number 1 right now is Bailando by Yuly y Habana C, Buena Fe & Descemer Bueno are Best Debut with Ser de sol debuting at Number 8 and Havana D'Primera has had the Biggest Jump with Al final de la vida at Number 4.
