CD Review: Guajira Mas Guajira by Eliades Ochoa & Alma Latina (Tumi 2016)

Renowned guitarist/singer/songwriter/bandleader Eliades Ochoa teams with his sister, María Ochoa, herself a prolific singer/songwriter, and the group Alma Latina in a very pleasant project that features Eliades on the armónico, a seven string hybrid of the guitar and the tres with a very distinct sound.   The instrument was first developed by Compay Segundo.  Musically the centerpiece of the album is the Guajira, but there are also elements of Changȕí, Rumba, Soca, and just a hint of Ska in some of the songs.   The bilingual  liner notes are mostly excellent (the credits for the individual artists could have been a little clearer) and include the Spanish lyrics to the songs along with some history.
