Concerts, Events and Reviews
JANUARY 3, 2017: THIS CALENDAR IS NO LONGER BEING UPDATED, BUT THERE ARE STILL INTERVIEWS AND REVIEWS ARCHIVED IN THE SUBPAGES.
NEW SEPTEMBER 2014:
Once upon a time, this was going to be a comprehensive calendar of live bands playing music of interest to our readers. Doing that sort of thing reliably requires the active participation and cooperation of bandleaders and presenters. While some have been excellent in that regard, many others have not. Effective September 2014, we are changing our mission to focus on the major musical events most important to our readers. We will still post other events if requested but will no longer be calling upon bands and venues to provide their listings. Most of the restaurants and venues shown below feature live music at some point during a typical month, and you can contact them directly to see who is playing.
This Calendar lists live music events both within Chicago and the larger region within reach of Chicagoans. The Agenda view shows more detail, and clicking on each item will also bring up a Google map. These listings are based upon information provided by venues, bands and promoters, and Timba.com is not responsible for schedule changes, cancellations, etc.
Are you a Timba, Salsa or Latin Jazz band, a venue presenting one, or a promoter for the band with an upcoming performance in the Chicago area or within driving distance from Chicago? Listings here are free (we reserve the right not to list any information submitted). Send the information (band, venue, performance dates, start/end times) at least a week in advance of the performance to bill.tilford@timba.com
See the Interviews & Reviews subpage and the new Reviews section for reviews and interviews of concerts, CDs, films, books etc. For some capsule reviews of area restaurants that regularly feature live music, see the Restaurants with La Música page. For a listing of the directories for Salsa instructors, DJs and their events (there are one or more DJ events somewhere virtually every night of every week), see the Dance Events and Resources page.

Notes About Some Key Concerts and Events
Some of the key events accessible to Chicagoans are:
A. Yoruba Andabo, Old Town School of Folk Music Saturday, 16 January 2016, 7PM
One of Cuba's most exciting Afro Cuban folkloric ensembles, is performing in Chicago in January. If you have the good fortune to be near the city, this is an event very much worth catching. This is a multifaceted ensemble including music, dance and folklore, and it is a true audiovisual experience. The Old Town School has been working on bringing this group for quite a while.
B. Eliades Ochoa & Barbarito Torres, Old Town School of Folk Music
Saturday, 30 January 2016, 8PM
Although most North Americans were probably introduced to these two artists via the Buena Vista Social Club project, their careers are far more extensive, and Mr. Ochoa in particular has been turning up in several projects in addition to his own recordings. Mr. Ochoa plays guitar, tres and cuatro, and Mr. Torres plays laud, a variant of the lute used in Cuba. Now that the BVSC ensemble has done its farewell tour of the US, projects like this one will probably be the next wave. Having said that, both of these gentlemen are excellent and worth catching.
