Cuba based rap duo, Zona Franka, blends traditional rhythms with the grit and swagger of hip-hop and rap vocal phrasings. Their clever shout choruses create instant tropical dance classics using their unique self-titled "changui con flow" style.

CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL SALSA CONGRESS 2013

SPECIAL EDITION

Review and all photos by Bill Tilford, all rights reserved

Team CISC (L to R): Saladeen Alamin, Maggie Garcia, Robert J. Aritzmendi
 David San Jose, Rosita Ragin

The 12th Edition of the Chicago International Salsa Congress starts today. In past years, we have always been in South Florida at this time, and our colleagues hang out at the Bay Area's festival, but this year is different; we're going to check it out and report on the bands and some of the workshops most relevant to our readers (this may not be a Rueda Festival, but there is a Rueda workshop as well as Guaguancó, Pachanga and some other items of interest, so don't feel sorry for yourself if you didn't fly west -- check out what there is here at home; there is a pretty phenomenal range of styles being taught in the dance workshops).

These photos are from the Wednesday Night VIP/Press reception, which included some of the numerous demonstration dancers that will be performing during the Congress as well as some very nice treats from Ron of Japan, the official Sushi of the Chicago International Salsa Congress. To see the full schedule of live bands, workshops, social dancing events and demonstrations, see http://www.chicagosalsacongress.com/index.php

See our CISC Dailies subpages and also a multipart article about the Congress in our Sin Clave No Hay Na'  blog.
