Dr. Umi Vaughan,who writes about Cuban music, gave an introduction to Raíces Profundas at the Marines Memorial Theater in San Francisco. The photos here are from performances on May 4 and May 6, 2012. The program included traditional folkloric and modern dances. The dancers were chosen by director Juan de Dios more for the feeling they had for the material than their classical expertise.

Manley "Piri" López is a phenomenon on traditional percussion.

Juan de Dios performed Danzón with a partner.

The final goodbye at the last show in San Francisco. Then it was back to Cuba!
